Today me & family went to see the play & we were surprised to find out it was the 23rd anniversary of the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway! It made the whole performance even more special & I hope it runs on broadway forever!!!!!
It is impossible not to hear this without a rush of chills. What a beautiful pairing. I respect that ALW did not want dubbing in the film version, but Mr. Butler could have used Michael Crawfords nuance, control and fine vocal quality. But, I’m not complaining – loved it all…
@EB88 According to Crawford, it’s the foam latex prosthetics on the face forming the deformities, that makes it harder to sing, while the mask was designed not to hinder the sound.
@Dirschbag The original LONDON cast CD is still available, starring Crawford and Brighton . . . . search for “phantom of the opera original cast” on amazon.co.uk
@EIPHNH22 I completely agree with you .. which is something I normally try to keep hidden as I find it’s nearly sacrilegious to say. But while Crawford is undoubtedly the best Phantom, .. Brightman just never did it for me.
I felt in love with the Phantom when I was 15. I heard the original cast and in a few days I knew all the lyrics from every song of the musical. Michael Crawford is THE BEST Phantom EVER but I also like Gerard’s version, he is another view of the role. I have to admit that I don’t like Sarah, she has so many vibrato in her voice and she’s not passionate, neither Emily Rossum, very good looking but she has to work with her voice,
I can’t help but giggle at how every single negative comment regarding Michael Crawford’s performance has been shot down.
Good riddance, bitches. Put him down and we will kick your ass. Michael Crawford is the one and only best Phantom. Ever. For God’s sake, listen to that voice. It could melt someone’s heart and freeze it in an instant.
@Dirschbag Even those who were lucky enough to have seen them, think it’s a terrible shame. The actual reasons for the agreement only ALW and company know. I suspect it’s because the production is still running, and if it was released, it would take away from the current shows. It would cut down on the box office receipts. What a pity, Crawford’s was and still is the best portrayal I’ve seen.
@thephantom1946 Really?! Do you know why they don’t have it available for the public? That’s a shame for everyone who is too young to have been able to see them! *cough* me *cough*
@Dirschbag They did tape the original cast, but it isn’t available for public viewing, or for sale to the public due to legal agreements at that time. It is in the Lincoln Center library for researchers, and the cast of the play that is still running on Broadway.
I wish they would have taped the original broadway cast on VHS (or even DVD), like they did for Cats…no one from my generation will be able to appreciate the BEST Phantom, Michael Crawford, except through CD
When I saw The Phantom Trista Moldovan played Christine. She was fantastic! When she hit that really high note it gave me chills!
No one beats Michael Crawford though.
Christine is supposed to be quite young, but the Phantom, in Leroux’s book is supposed to be sixtyish. Crawford could have easily done it, as he still looks a good ten years younger than his real age, today. He turns 69 on Jan 19. Most people are aware of that fact, if they know the real story. ALW admits right now, the Phantom shouldn’t be played by a younger person.
@DiMeraLover Originally they were going to cast SB and MC but by the time the movie was made they couldn’t realistically play the ages of the characters.
I can’t help but laugh when the Phantom pushes Christine’s face away at, “Turn your face away from the garish light of day”. It looks pretty comical. xD
But I think.. my favorite Phantom is Gerard Butler, only because I saw the movie first and I’m more familiar with it.
@leishaandniyabff lol, not sexy enough? Tell that to the thousands of ladies in the audience during Crawford’s run who were fanning themselves and swooning for his Phantom.

I was fortunate enough to see Phantom in NYC, with Michael. He was mesmerizing in that role. Notice how he uses his hands-hypnotic.
I wonder if the mask makes it harder to sing… it looks like it kinda covers your nose and ruins the vibrations.

Sarah Brightman’s voice still gives me goosebumps.

They are AMAZING! I wish i had of been alive to see the original broadway show, none of the knockoffs can even compare.

@Lordvany19 True that i like gerald butler but he is better!!
@DiMeraLover I agree, the voice of the guy in the movie was too rough. I liked the movie but thought they could have cast a better phantom.
63 idiotic Gerard Butler dislike the superior Michael Crawford version.

Sarah Brightman is Christine, funny I never heard of her until Repo! She is indeed one of the best singers out there. Love her!
