What is the difference between using a Web application and the shortcut on the desktop by simply opening the browser?

I’ve recently started using Google Chrome is an open source browser from Google. Webb has a shortcut function from the application that puts shortcuts to favorite sites ur on ur desktop and I was wondering what is the difference between using one of these shortcuts and justt go to the site in a browser ?
