This is so strange. It is very melodic death metal, but not much like Children of Bodom or Rotting Christ. The vocalist sounds like Alexi of Children of Bodom, but the music is more along the lines of melodic death metal, not atmospheric power metal. These 9 songs (with a BEAUTIFUL 2 minute intro) are so amazingly good. The only complaint is that the singer actually gets in the way of hearing the music (which is quite fast) at many times. The title track is my favorite, being almost 7 minutes long and the longest song on the CD. The track following the intro is also quite good, ranking as my 2nd favorite on the CD, starting off quite soft, coming after the intro. That song is the shortest on the album being only 3 and a half minutes long. This has got to be the most atmospheric death metal album out there. It reminds me of Norther’s CD, “Dreams of Endless War” a lot. Only compare this to Children of Bodom for the singer. Another softer death metal band is Rotting Christ. The keyboards in this sound more like them. I can’t think of any relation to Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, or Dark Tranquility, who are 3 bands many more people know about. Some of the drumming on this album is the fastest non-blastbeat drumming I’ve EVER heard. Speaking of which, there are no blastbeats – sorry Cradle of Filth fans. A final note. I don’t believe they let you see the cover art. If it concerns you, it is all tanish and not atmospheric at all – far from Visions, Oceanborn, or Arcana. So if you don’t mind, please make the one click to say if my review helped you or not. Thanks!

While trolling through the infinite dregs of the online underground metal scene looking for some Sakkuth songs, I came across a group of Australian metal fans. These people had no Sakkuth to offer me, but they did have a song by a band named ‘Skyfire’. The song was entitled Dimensions Unseen.Keep in mind that whenever I listen to underground music, I’ve made it my policy never to expect very much. When I heard the first 20 seconds of Dimensions Unseen, however, I hadn’t felt such awe from a song since I heard Children of Bodom’s “Downfall” for the first time. I went on to listen to even more of their stuff. Expecting that they would be “one-hit wonders”, I was again shocked. While no song matched the awe of Dimensions Unseen, every other song I heard came very close.I concluded that Skyfire mixes the greatest guitar elements of Children of Bodom with the greatest atmospheric elements of Spiritual Black Dimensions-era Dimmu Borgir and throws in a little of the epic-ness of Colony-era In Flames, thereby creating a sound unlike any other I’ve previously heard. If you like any kind of melodic death or black metal, this is DEFINITELY worth purchasing.

Take equal parts In Flames inspired riffage, epic symphonic keyboards a la Children of Bodom, and Dream Theatre styled time changes (ok, not quite THAT insane), add a healthy dose of screamed black metal vox, and you might, just might come up with Skyfire. What you will come up with is a neckache from snapping your cerebrum around the room and angry neighbors from the constant blaring sounds emanating from your speakers. As much as I love the exotic mix of metal and power symphonic music made famous by Bodom, I’ll never get used to down and dirty riffing coupled with over the top keyboards. Skyfire does this well. There is no doubt that fans of the already mentioned bands, as well as extreme metal newbies, will find something to like here. Skyfire’s debut will fit comfortably in your collection alongside both Stratovarius and Bodom. It’s got to be something in the water up there, because the overall consistent quality metal coming out of Scandanavia seems like it will never tire or dry up. Just check out the insane drumming, scaled guitarwork and bombastic keyboards of a track like “By God Forsaken” to see what I mean. Albums such as these cannot be digested in a single listen; there’s simply too much going on. This is complex music for fans of Yngwie Malmsteen who want to broaden their tastes, and for fans of Kalmah who want to broaden their tastes. Each song brings something new to the table, yet never strays all that far from the working formula they’ve come up with. Now, it’s not quite as awesome as the first time you heard Children of Bodom, but it is only their first album. Given time, Skyfire will be a well-known Euro-import and respected worldwide. Highly recommended.

I own this album and I must say it kicks ass. Imagine the energy of power metal without the high pitched girlish screams then you’ll get a better idea of Skyfire. The band has the Swedish Death Metal sound but not only are there riffs melodic, they even have some nice keyboarding to top it off. Fans of Children of Bodom and Kalmah will probably like this. Very melodic, very well done. GET IT!
