What is appropiate to wear when going to see an opera?

Question by Cindy K: What is appropiate to wear when going to see an opera?
I’m going to play an orchestra at the New York Philharmonic under the plan. I’ve never attended an opera before, and I am confused what to wear. Any suggestions?

What should I wear?

One of the fun things about opera is that there is no set dress code. You will find people dressed in anything from business casual, to Sunday best, to what I like to call the “fur-brigade.” About 75% will wear what they might wear to a church service, but by all means if you have that formal gown and are just dying to wear it out, you will not feel out of place. Ripped jeans and a t-shirt will not get you kicked out of the opera house, but you might consider cleaning up a bit. On a side note, if you are going to a premiere or opening night, people tend to dress on the fancier side of things.

First, an opera and a symphonic or orchestral concert aren’t the same thing, although they’re both in the area of classical music. Generally an opera (a sung drama, often in a foreign language) is dressier. I’d suggest at least a cocktail-type dress for you and a suit for your escort. I’ve seen women in evening dresses and men in black tie even at the symphony, but I’d reserve that level of formality for the best seats at either. At the other extreme, I’ve seen people at both in jeans, which I wouldn’t recommend. (After all, if you like to dress up, why pass up one of the few opportunities left?) Just be sure your dress and your shoes are comfortable! . .

Just remember that you are going to be sitting for a couple of hours, so wear something that looks neat, and is comfortable. You won’t wear hats or anything that will block the view of the people behind you. Enjoy!
