Seriously, go for it! Opera is wonderful and i have chosen to make my life out of it. Straight out of college is quite a hard time because you will need to make a name for yourself, however if you go to a good college with lots of performance opportunities then you may get noticed at and in-school production. After that it is a lot of odd jobs and if you are really lucky you will be taken on by an opera group or festival e.g. Gleinbourne in England. It is very hard and you won’t get much in the beginning but stick at it and things will start to appear. Around Europe there are many performance opportunities and a lot of young opera singers go to France, Italy and Germany where there is a lot more money in the music business, especially opera, Germany in particular. The college you go to will also determine how well you come off in an audition, for example singers from La Scala, the famous opera house and school in Milan are more likely to get a job than from other colleges. Good luck with your singing, hope this helped.

    Hi Saucerful,
Your voice teacher’s right, there’s not much demand for opera singers.
    However,
I would also say go for it.
I know 7 classically-trained singers: five from New England Conservatory, one from Boston Conservatory, and one from the Longy School of Music. Of these, three are making their living primarily by singing. Two sing part-time as they’ve become moms. The other two, as far as I know, are out of music completely, except maybe for singing in an unpaid church choir.
The impression I’ve gotten from the three who sing professionally is that
    A) they’re excellent musicians
    B) they’re unafraid to vigorously network
