Q&A: How do I reinstall Internet Explorer and erase all of the old files?

Question by JaimieS: How do I reinstall Internet Explorer and erase all of the old files?
If I install Internet Explorer 8 – it will simply overwrite all files. I think a bad virus or something took over my internet explorer, because it does not work, but I can not delete it because the computer says it’s used. Will solve this problem? I have an antivirus program and it is not to see anything bad on my system. Crud – I have to do a full installation of Windows to solve this?

No you dont have to install any windows for it. You cannot un-install Internet Explorer as it is the part of your OS. But you can install the new one,it may help you.

Just make sure you install the latest version and update it to the latest. It might help.

You cannot uninstall it because it is apart of the Microsoft Windows Software.

However, it must not be in use if you are going to install another version of it.

To completely exit out of the Internet Explorer program and to be sure that it is no longer in use, do this:

Hit these three buttons together = Ctrl, Alt, and Delete.

From here, your Task Manager should open up. Click on the “Processes” tab.

    Look for this running file:

    iexplorer.exe

Once you find it, right-click it. Next, click “End Task.” If it asks you are you sure, just click ‘yes’ or ‘okay’.

Now you are safe to install another version of Internet Explorer, preferably version number eight, as it is the newest one. Once you install a newer version of Internet Explorer, the newer version will overwrite the old files, so don’t worry about that.

If your problem still persists after doing this, contact Microsoft’s Customer Support line and/or look for solutions via the internet or a book, etc.

Worst Case Scenario: You have to re-install Windows (I highly doubt this).

Good Luck and I hope this helps!

Hi, my name’s Feran and I’m with the Internet Explorer Outreach Team.

Visit this site to see how to uninstall –
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/support/faq.aspx – this will revert you to the previous IE you were using. Then download IE8 again: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx?ocid=ie8_sm_b

    Hope this helps!

As many people have said you cant re-install internet explorer, and unless you re-format your computer you are pretty much stuffed, however there is a way, kinda

hold ctrl+alt+delete and go to task manager, in that there is a number of tabs near the top, click on the one that says “processes” and a whole list of strange names will come up look for one that says “iexplore”(or “iexplorer”) and right click and click end process the yes
then you should be able to delete the file

if that doesn’t work then either get a better anti-virus or there isnt a virus at all
    hope you fix it

oh damn someone has already said all this oh well xD
