How to check if Apple iTunes is installed from a browser and how to start?

By clicking on an application for the iPhone, the browser checks if iTunes is installed and started or provide a link to download iTunes. How is this apple?

    Is likely to create some kind of registry key to indicate that it is installed and if the key is not found, then it is installed
