How IE and Firefox make money? Where is the source of income come from?

How Microsoft and Firefox owners make money? Google also plans to create a browser to compete with them called “chrome”. I was wondering where the source of income comes through? No advertising, etc. These programs are free.

Microsoft makes money (obviously) the sale of its software and have a monopoly on the big screen. Firefox does not “advertising” for the Google search bar. Firefox is open source, so much work has been done for free by people who wanted to contribute, so it is much easier to give financial support.

Firefox gets a lot of money from Google’s search bar. MS is likely to generate money by having AOL as my home page. Of course, you can change, but many people also leave the page (which is AOL) and AOL would likely have to pay MS.

Microsoft make money by selling other products (the MS Office, etc. ..) Mozilla receive contributions through donations from different sources (such as shareware). For example: Google makes tons of money for Mozilla (developer of Firefox, Thunderbird (email), and other products). Everyone can contribute to the development of Mozilla, as is an open source software.
