Liquidware announces an open-source Android Development Kit

The Liquidware Android Open Source Development Kit is modular and easily interfaces with customized hardware

Canton, MA (Business Wire) 21 October 2010

Liquid product, one of the leading open-source engineering firm based in Boston, MA on Tuesday announced the availability of open source hardware development platform Android. The Android platform is modular gadget the first commercial modular development kit based entirely on open source software and hardware reference designs. The Android platform is modular gadget for Rapid Prototyping Android designed. The gadget platform is around 5 main modules, which connect directly with each other to facilitate the rapid development can be designed. The modules include an organic light emitting diode (OLED) touchscreen, a high performance ARM carrier board, an extended capacity lithium-ion battery, USB Hub and Wireless-G module. In combination, these modules have a fully networked Android gadget run any APK Android App files.

In 2010, grew from a small Android mobile operating system in the preferred operating system for consumer and industrial design development. Today, thousands of hardware engineers and software developers Android platform of choice for end-user applications.

Google’s own development platform, the Nexus was introduced in 2008 and saw enormous popularity among software developers. Since then, however, some development kits have been developed and introduced.

“This is a major problem for Android development,” Justin Huynh said in an interview on Tuesday. “The current developed Android devices on the market for software applications only. They are not designed in a third party sensors, integrated industrial control and automation systems, medical devices or not.”

“We see the Android platform modular gadget to rapid prototyping engineers and developers looking for the absolute fastest way to get a product proof-of-concept functional requirements have to be.”

While Android has enjoyed rapid growth and successful introduction on the market, it faces steep competition from Apple’s iPhone and iPad operating system and the recently announced Microsoft Windows 7 Mobile platform. However, the Android operating system, the only open-source system and allow developers to decide on the proprietary options from Apple and Microsoft because of the availability of sunk costs and free compilers and development tool chains.

On Liquid goods, we believe in the power of Open Source. Our customers are demanding, high-end developers and advanced systems engineers. They demand the best and most efficient tools available. Today, nothing 100% is a completely Open Source development stack, which we are proud to deliver the Android platform modular gadget. “

In the past, have been delivered consumer gadget development platforms with closed source, proprietary systems. These cost $ 1000-2000 in the software alone, and often ran to a limited part of the hardware. The integrated development environment is often error-prone and buggy and hardware development took months. Today open source software tool chains and open source hardware reference designs have reduced out-of-pocket software costs of $ 100-200, and left hardware development time from months to weeks.
